Which Bed Rail Do I Need? Answer 3 Questions
Abdikadir AbdinasirShare
I'm Abdi — I've been a caregiver for 10 years. Bed rails come in different shapes, and picking the wrong one is the most common mistake I see. Answer these three questions and you'll land on the right one.
Question 1: What's the main problem?
If the person needs something to grab when sitting up or standing from bed → you want a grab handle, like the Stander BedCane.
A grab handle is a single sturdy bar right where their hand lands. It helps them pull up, swing their legs over the side, and stand with something solid under their hand. This is the right pick when the person can still move around in bed fine — they just need a hand getting upright.
If the person is sliding or falling out of bed at night → you want a coverage rail, like the Stander 30" Safety Bed Rail or the Wonder EZ Adjust Bed Rail.
A coverage rail runs along a longer stretch of the bed's edge. It blocks rolling and gives a wide surface to grab from anywhere along that stretch. This is the right pick when staying in bed safely is the main concern.
If both are true — they need help sitting up AND they've nearly rolled out — pick the coverage rail. It handles both jobs.
Question 2: How thick is the mattress?
This matters more than people think. A rail sized for a thin mattress will sit loose on a thick pillow-top, and a loose rail isn't safe.
If the mattress is a standard thickness (roughly 8 to 12 inches) → the 30" Safety Bed Rail fits well.
If the mattress is extra thick or extra thin → go with the Wonder EZ Adjust Bed Rail. It adjusts to fit, so you don't have to guess.
Not sure how thick it is? Measure from the top of the mattress to the bottom. Take 30 seconds — it saves a return.
Question 3: Could their needs change soon?
Recovery, aging, a new medication — sometimes someone who just needs a grab handle today needs more coverage in a few months.
If their condition is stable → buy for today. The BedCane or 30" rail you picked above is fine.
If things are changing — recent discharge from the hospital, a new diagnosis, balance that's getting worse — → the Wonder EZ Adjust Bed Rail is the safer bet. It gives coverage now and adjusts if the situation changes later.
When in doubt after a hospital stay, talk to their doctor or physical therapist about what they expect. We can match a rail to that plan.
Your answer in three steps:
- Sitting up problem → BedCane. Falling-out problem → coverage rail.
- Odd mattress thickness → EZ Adjust.
- Changing needs → EZ Adjust.
